How we count downloads

Download numbers on Bedrock Graphics are meant to count people getting a file, not clicks, retries or bots. Here is exactly what we count, what we store and how to opt out.

What counts as a download

We count a verified download when the file was actually handed over: your browser was sent to the stored file, the file was sent in full, or, for a Utilities project that links to the publisher's site, you confirmed the destination and it opened.

  • Double clicks count once. Repeats of the same version by the same visitor within 30 seconds are one download.
  • Bots are filtered out. Requests from declared crawlers (a published list of crawler user agents) and requests without a browser identity are not counted.
  • Automated patterns are filtered out. For example, downloading the same version more than 3 times in one day, more than 10 downloads an hour, or sweeping through many versions within minutes.
  • Creators and staff are not counted. Downloads by the project owner and by staff do not add to the total.
  • Not downloads: failed or missing files, link previews and prefetches, and lookups by launchers and other apps through our API.

The number on a project page

Verified counting has not started on this site yet. Until it does, project pages show the earlier counter, which counts every download request and can include automated traffic.

When verified counting starts, the earlier total is kept as a fixed starting number and the date is shown here. From then on, totals grow only with verified downloads.

Faking or manipulating downloads breaks rule R-PROH-8.

Views and visitors

Creators see these numbers in their analytics; they are not shown publicly.

  • Project views count page loads of a project page by people, with repeats by the same visitor within 30 minutes counted once. Owner and staff views are excluded.
  • Unique viewers and unique downloaders are counted per day and added up over a date range, so one person who visits on three days counts three times.
  • Days are UTC calendar days. A day starts at midnight UTC wherever you are.
  • Small numbers are hidden or grouped as "Other" where they could identify someone.

What we store

We run in count-only mode. Each counted event stores the page or project, the version, the time, the type of request and the outcome. It stores no visitor identifier and no details about you, such as your country, the site you came from or your device.

To tell a repeat from a new download, the server keeps a short-lived key, derived from your IP address and browser with a secret that changes daily, in temporary memory only. It expires within about a day and is never written to our database or logs.

For signed-in members, page views record only that a member viewed the page, never which member. Your IP address and your browser's full identity string are never stored with any statistic.

How long we keep it

Statistics retention
DataKept for
Raw page view and download events90 days
Raw hearts, ratings, comments and follows90 days
Search statistics90 days
Daily totals per project, creator and site25 months
Daily activity of signed-in members25 months
Lifetime download total per project and versionAs long as the project exists

Older raw events are deleted once their daily totals are complete. Daily totals contain counts only, never visitor keys.

Google Analytics and our numbers

Google Analytics runs only if you allow analytics cookies, and you can change that choice in . It sees only visitors who allowed it and measures differently, so its numbers will not match the counts on this site.

Links shared by creators can carry a ref tag that only our own statistics read. Our own campaign links use utm_ tags, which Google Analytics also reads. A link never carries both.

Opt out

Anonymous statistics on this browser

If you opt out, your visits and downloads still count toward the totals, but they are stored count-only in every mode: no visitor key and no details. The short-lived duplicate check still applies, so a double click still counts once.

Not opted out

The button stores an essential cookie named bg_stats_optout on this browser for 365 days. It holds only the value 1, our server reads it on each request, and it is not shared with anyone. It is an essential cookie because it records a choice you made, like the cookie that remembers your consent. Clearing your cookies removes it. Browsers that send Global Privacy Control or Do Not Track are opted out in the same way without the cookie.
